International symposium "Ex umbra in solem" in Lviv

Nov. 1, 2017, midnight

The symposium "Ex umbra in solem" ("From shadow into light") aimed to bring together the music researchers from West and East and to encourage the conversation about lost, rediscovered, or newly evaluated music papers. The main emphasis of the conference was on the research in the fields of discovering, reconstruction and storage of the music materials. We published the call for papers in the end of May and received over 40 abstracts from the researchers both from West and East (Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Austria, England, Italy, Australia etc.). With the lectures of the keynote speaker, Prof. Christoph Wolff, and the various panel discussions, the symposium became a significant academic event that gave important impulses for further dialogues within Ukraine as well as between West and East.

You can find the program of the symposium, as well as the abstracts of the papers, here:

The most important outcomes of the symposium are the following ones:

  • The cooperation with RISM (Répertoire International des Sources Musicales), aiming at including the items from Ukrainian music archives into the global online system of RISM
  • The opening of the Wolff Library in the Sheptytsky Center of the Ukrainian Catholic University
